Clan MacEwen
Clan MacEwan is one of Scotland's oldest clans, sprung from the Siol Gillevray of the Dalriada Scots. Clan MacEwan is known as a broken clan, meaning that we have no Chief and that we have no lands. We are, however, anything but broken. Our lineage stretches for over a thousand years; from the misty dawn of recorded history in Ireland, where the first Owen, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, High King of Ireland, founded one of the greatest Clans in irish history, through the MacEwens of Otter, with nine Chiefs over two centuries, through strong lines in many clans, to landed familes of the present day. For a clan as small as MacEwan (we have no septs, or subordinate families), we have spread throughout the world as widely as any Clan ever has. It is our hope, indeed, that our Clan motto shall one day come to pass: "Reviresco" - I Live Again!
Since the Clan MacEwan has no Chief, we have no standing in that regard within Scotland. Those wishing to flock to the banner of Clan MacEwan have, as have many other Chiefless Clans, formed Clan Societies (such as the Clan Ewen Society, USA), dedicated to the research and preservation of the history of our Clan.
As befits a Clan as beloved as Clan MacEwan, we are also counted as septs of many other Scottish Clans. It is amazing to see how many consider us to be family. This can be particularly encouraging when visiting a Highland Games and Clan Gathering where Clan MacEwan does not maintain a presence. It is a rare Gathering where at least one Clan present will not count MacEwan as a member! The 2006 Annual Business Meeting will be held at the Stone Mountain Games in Stone Mountain, Georgia in October.
The Tartan of the Clan MacEwan is a simple and lovely sett, widely regarded as one of the most attractive of all Scottish Tartans. It does, however, resemble many other tartans, some of which belong to Clans whose members far outnumber the MacEwan. It is, therefore, hard to find, but worthwhile to do so.
Although we have no Chief, there have been strong blood-lines and landed MacEwan families throughout history, and many devices (badges, crests, coats-of-arms) have been used to identify the MacEwan name.
Relatively little history exists regarding the Clan MacEwan. Books, papers, and other materials are reproduced here, as available.
